Crime Against Humanity

Recently my sister told me that failure to develop and use our gifts to the greatest extent possible is the height of ingratitude to God, who bestowed the gifts upon us. As I reflected upon her words I came to realize that such acts go beyond ingratitude and are probably criminal.

When you have a gift that you squander; a voice that you mute; an expertise that you do not use or pass down; an idea, invention, book, or the like, that you hoard or hide within yourself, then you are committing a crime against humanity. Previously, we have limited our indictments to atrocities such as genocide and enslavement. I submit when we fail to bring to the world our individual greatness, we too are committing an indictable offense.

It is nothing less than a crime against all humanity when you are the light, or have a light within you, that you ignore. No. You must stoke that fire. Work till it blazes as high and hot as possible for the benefit of all mankind.

If we have the ability to start a revolution of thought that could change the condition of our people, for example, and do not do so, we have behaved criminally. Just as criminally as those who broadcast foolish, self-destructive ideas.

What if Harriett Tubman, Malcolm X, Martin Luther King, Jr., Nelson Mandela, Jomo Kenyatta, Kwame Nkrumah, Ivan Van Sertima, Cheikh Anta Diop, and Eric Williams all failed to use their gifts? Where would we be?
